Is MMA Dangerous?

Although you can be seriously hurt in the partaking of MMA but most of the time it is a lot safer than other contact sports. There has only ever been two people die from MMA ever. Plus it is known that the two people that died already had physical ailments which ultimately played a huge factor in the reason why they died. Although you occasionally hear of a broken bone or two those usually heal to being almost back to 100% normal. Now lets take a look at some of the contact sports that get to go under the radar of the public eye because they are complaining about MMA.

Football

Yes that is right Football has the one of the biggest causality and fatality rate’s in today’s modern sports. So far on record it has killed 325 Boys and Men in the last 26 years although not all of these deaths happen on the field but it is still a lot of deaths compared to the two that have been killed in MMA.

Ice Hockey

When you watch a decent game of Ice Hockey you will almost always see someone get injured in the name of their sport. Here is one example how hockey players can get seriously injured. On the ice they can reach a speed of up to twenty five miles an hour but we will say that their average is fifteen miles an hour now if you have two people both going into each other that is a thirty mile an hour crash for both of them. There have also been cases where an unlucky hockey player has been hit with a frozen puck in the chest and has ended up dieing.

Boxing

This is the most dangerous contact sport in the world at the moment yet it doesn’t cop anything near what MMA does for people being in danger. Here is just a little example of how boxing is more dangerous then MMA. The average boxing glove is 16oz which is build to protect the boxers hand not the opponents face. This in turn allows the puncher to do more punches as the other boxer gets more and more blows. Where as a typical MMA glove weighs in at a little four ounces which means that it protects both the puncher and it also won’t harm his opponent.

Alternatives To MMA

Although you will not be finding any sport quite like MMA for quite some time there are still many different Martial Arts that you can learn and you can also fight in usually well tournaments. This is a great way of getting started in MMA because as people always say you have to learn to crawl before you walk basically meaning that you should start out with an easier sport learn all the techniques and then learn and fight in MMA. I am not trying to say that you can not do MM before you have done any other sorts of Martial Arts but it is a very good idea as if you do not know what you are doing in MMA it can potentially be a brutally painful experience.

Tae Kwon Do

Now there are two different types of Tae Kwon Do WTF and ITF. WTF stands for World Tae Kwon Do Federation whereas ITF stands for International Tae Kwon Do Federation. ITF was the original of the two and then the Korean Government made WTF to overtake ITF. Although WTF focuses on foot techniques more than ITF it is considered more of a fitness thing more than a Martial Art. But ITF is considered more of a Martial Art then fitness training. But both are considered quite a weak Martial Art unless you are doing it for many years.

Kung Fu And Wushu

These both originate from China and are quite possibly the oldest Martial Arts ever but they are also the most powerful. They were invented in there early stages up to 4000 years ago for the Chinese army to use. Although there are hundreds of different styles they all branch out from the same tree and have just been changed a little bit along the way. But let me make this clear they are a very serious and strict Martial Art but if you ever get into a fight with someone and if you know Kung Fu or Wushu they better watch out as there will be little stopping you.

Karate

Right you knew it was coming Karate is quite possibly the most well known Martial Art in the world. It originates from Japan and incorporates a little bit of everything from punching, to knife hands (formally known as the Karate Chop), kicking and even thrusting techniques. It helped propel the use of Martial Arts in western films and nowadays it is hard to see a movie without a little bit of Karate included.

MMA Gear

Although it wouldn’t seem like it but MMA gear is a very important part of the sport and can ultimately help a lot in winning a competition. With the right gear and attitude you will be unstoppable. The only thing is, is that MMA gear as well as Martial Arts gear in general is usually on the expensive side and it isn’t the stuff that you usually want to buy bad quality type items for.

The Most Important Piece Of Gear Is You

Although you may think that this is silly but ultimately you are easily the most important piece of gear you can use while fighting. And if you don’t look after yourself with good diet and exercise you will perform just like a pair of old tatty MMA Gloves you won’t work nearly as well as you should. Also if your body is properly conditioned and your mind is focused and you know what you need to do and remember those perfect techniques you will be unstoppable even if you were to fight in your underwear.

Wearing The Right Clothes

First of all you do not want to be wearing heavy or baggy Jeans or sweat pants. You want to be wearing a not to tightly fitting pair of fighting shorts. Which are designed to not be to tight or to loose and they will let you kick and stretch to your full ability. You also want to be wearing a well fitting t-shirt that will let you move around without restricting you and ripping and that also won’t be so loose that it is flopping all over the place.

Fighting Gear

If you keep punching something repeatedly your knuckles will start to bleed and the skin will tear. Which is one of the reasons why people in MMA are made to wear gloves another reason is so that they don’t seriously hurt their opponent. But before you wear your glover you have to wear hand wraps which is a cloth that you wrap around your whole hand and it keeps your hands from getting to sweaty.

MMA Training Routine

To be involved in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts or MMA for short you have to be seriously fit otherwise half way through a fight you will begin to tire a lot which will ultimately lead to lack of concentration. Lack of concentration in the sport of MMA is not a very good thing to have as ultimately nine times out of ten you will end ultimately lose the fight and you probably wont even know why.

Bag Workout

Although you can have a lot of fun on a punching bag for casual use if you are using it for MMA training chances are if you are really pushing yourself you will end up hating it well at least until your work out is over. The best thing about a bag is you get to practice technique and you get to get even more fit by using them. A good regimen for the Bag is just to do the first kicks and punches that come to mind as fast as possible without compromising on technique. Maybe on the first day time how long you can go for before you start to slow and become sloppy then the next day try and do another perfect 30 seconds on top of what you did the day before. Slowly but surely this will improve your technique and improve your fitness.

Go For Runs

Although this seems like a no-brainer it is really very important it may be the thing that gave you that little bit of fitness when you really need it in the last minute of a match. If you are not very fit to start of then just start of jogging small distances and slowly increase how far and how fast you run everyday. Although you will hate running to start off with but fitness is a big part of this sport and you will soon grow to love running.

Pump The Iron

When training for MMA you have to be very careful with how you work on your mussels because you want to be strong you also want to be light which means that you don’t want huge mussels so that means that you should be doing exercises like chin ups and push ups over doing too many dumbbells which will make your mussels big.

What is MMA?

MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts it is a full contact sport. It is made up from techniques from many different martial arts hence the name Mixed Martial Arts. It basically takes the best techniques from a lot of the main martial arts such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Wrestling. Although mainly it is used as a sport you still don’t want to be picking fights with people trained in MMA because even though it is a sport they are still trained in fighting techniques so there is a large chance that you will be waking up the next morning after a fight with a very, very sore body.

History Of MMA

People believe that ancient Grease contributed a lot towards MMA because they were the first country to start a fighting sport with little rules and regulations. Although most of the fighting done in Grease was more brute for brute type fighting like only using very basic moves such as punching with no real technique. It still gave MMA a solid idea and foundation to grow on. It then turned into the sport that we know as MMA when some wrestlers learned fighting techniques and started using them in no holds bared Wrestling.

MMA Today

MMA has come a very long way from ancient Grease it is now counted as an official sport and is played by many around the world and watched by thousands. And there are now official camps and training groups and clubs to learn MMA in these days as the world is demanding better and better shows which means we need better and better fighters.

Rules

There are a lot of rules in MMA now a days but it is still a dangerous sport. Some of the rules they have now are. There are many weight classes so it is a lot more fair and a lot safer as someone that is only five feet won’t be paired up with someone six and a half feet. They also put a time limit on a lot of matches these days so that you won’t have a boring start to the fight as both fighters save their energy for the last part of the fight usually.

MMA Pound For Pound

As we all know nothing is certain in the world of MMA fighting. This is probably what leads to such heated debates around the MMA pound for pound system. Who are the worlds best fighters? Who is the worlds un-disputable BEST fighter?
It’s question such as these which have prompted the creation of a whole new category the MMA pound for pound. Where we try to look not just at one dimension and who holds the title but who has earned their rankings.
Who are the fighters who train hard, stick to their routine, plan their diet and fight even harder? With MMA pound for pound all the rankings are pretty un-official but that’s no reason not to believe them. Instead of arguing put your own thoughts.

MMA pound for pound isn’t about being right, it’s about finding the strongest fighters out there right now. Here’s our top 3 picks when it comes to MMA pound for pound rankings;

Number One Goes To Fedor Emilanenko

The number one position goes without a doubt to Fedor Emilanenko who not only sports an outstanding record of 29-1 but also defeated the former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski with a brutal knockout.

He’s earned his spot not through media advertising or hype, it’s all completely solid. This guy is a BEAST and he completely destroys his completion, that’s why we’ve given him the first position in our MMA pound for pound rankings.

Second Is George St. Pierre

Next on our list is none other than George St. Pierre. Another AMAZING fighter who not only displays complete dedication to his sport but also showed us that he’s capable of destructive fights. Such as his match against Bj Penn in which he showed a greater power then previously thought possible.

His next big challenge will be against Thiago Alves, however if he can grab that spot there’s no reason to think he’ll be leaving the welterweight title anytime soon. It’s the dedication, power and speed which allow George St. Pierre to steal the 2nd position in our MMA pound for pound rankings.

In Third Position Is Anderson Silva

Anderson Silva – An unbelievable fighter. He’s got some of the best ground skills in the ring and always leaves a trail of destruction stemming from his last victim (or fight). Trained in Maui Thai is what gives him the edge over his wrestling and boxing counter parts.

If you want entertainment all you have to do is watch one of his fights and you’ll see what it’s all about. Nobody puts on a better show then Silva. And that wraps our top 3 picks for MMA pound for pound rankings.

Remember With MMA Pound For Pound

Once again, I’d like to mention these are un-official rankings and all though you may not agree completely with us on the positions we have given them you should definitely agree that all 3 of these fighters are among the BEST in the world right now. Each has his strengths and weaknesses which is what makes the sport so interesting. We can only guess at who’s here to stay and who’s going down soon. Either way we know it’s going to be a good show when it does happen. So stick around and keep reading out MMA pound for pound rankings as we update them every few months.
